Hunter Maverick is seated at home, in deep meditation. Its a daily ritual that he strictly follows, he needs it. The deep trance everyday, helps him focus, keeps him sharp and makes him feel invincible. This one hour a day he is in balance with everything. There is no yesterday, no tomorrow, there is just the here and now. He feels his body and spirit melt together as one, his senses sharpened and his awareness widened. He feels everything and nothing, his mind is working overtime, thoughts rushing through his head, yet it is calm as he just observes them, notices them, but doesn't reflect or pursue them. He is just here and now, nothing more and nothing less.
After he finishes he slowly rises and walks out into the bathroom, where he undresses and steps into the shower, turning on the cold water and letting it run down his muscular body. The cold water awakes every single fiber of his body and cleanses his mind. No thought and no distraction, just the feeling of the fleeting moments pearling of him like the drops of water.
Now that he has finished his morning ritual, he can finally sit down and enjoy breakfast, All Bran flakes and a cup of tea. The flakes are done with quickly and he leans back with the steaming tea cup in his hands and looks out of the window. Its sunny and his eyes catch the sun shining on a spiderweb, where a fly is caught, still fighting for its life.
Fighting is one thing Hunter knows, whether it is in theory or in practice his been there and done that. Not a man, who normally would dwell on loses or victories. He cant help looking back on his tenure in MCCW, he had some losses, but his last match was a victory, and a hard fought one. He rubs his neck, its still sore from the match with Taufik, but he knows this is no time to feel sorry for himself. He is after all fighting a king next.
Later that day, he finds himself, in the dojo of Takeda Sanosuke, an old friend and a great teacher. Sano, as his friends call him, is a martial artist and wrestler, who Hunter trained and worked with for years. He was actually the one who helped Hunter incorporate the traditional martial arts into his repertoire.
Maverick and Sano are sitting drinking tea in the office. Although the surroundings are casual and the atmosphere relaxed, Hunter is tense.
Sano: What is the matter Hunter San?
Hunter: Nothing Sano sama, its just my next match, that is occupying my mind and heart.
Sano: Let me help you find your path remember that among the maxims on Lord Naoshige's wall, there was this one: "Matters of great concern should be treated lightly." Master Ittei commented, "Matters of small concern should be treated seriously."
Hunter: I know what the teachings say, but I feel like I am straying from the path I have chosen. I stand to face a man proclaiming himself King of the world. A ruler in his own mind, with skills to back some of his claims. Still he seeks power and dominance by any means necessary and I can't find honor nor respect for this man.
Sano: Lesser men will seek power, where as power will seek the greater men.
Hunter: What do you mean?
Sano: This king your fighting is of so little conviction and confidence in his own skill, that he only looks for the end of his journey. You on the other hand, does not seek the end, but the journey itself to better your skill and convictions.
Hunter: Yes, but is single mindedness not the way of the samurai?
Sano: True, single mindedness is all powerful, but is not the way it self. You have to be true to the thought of the moment and avoid distraction. Other than continuing to exert yourself, enter into nothing else, but go to the extent of living single thought by single thought
Hunter: You are probably right Sano sama, but still he somehow got under my skin and has planted seeds of doubt.
Maverick does a slight bow towards his friend as he gets up
Hunter: I will have to go now, but I will hold your words in my heart.
Sano: Good my friend
Slowly Hunter turns and start to walk out still pondering on the words just spoken, as Sano suddenly calls on him
Sano: And Hunter, Kick his ass!!!
A creepy smile grows on the Japaneses face as Maverick stops dead in his tracks
Hunter: ERR excuse me?
Sano: Kick his ass, I cant stand the guy!... and remember we can talk bushido and martial arts all you want but in the end we are warriors, who don't waste time on cheap talk.
A smile brightens up Hunters face as he leaves with a slight wave, its time to get ready
Its late in the evening as Hunter returns home, its been a long day combined with training both his body and mind. Slowly he sits down in his armchair and looks around.
Soon I will defend my kingdom against a self proclaimed king and his princess. I will step into the ring as a warrior my mind and soul at peace, in harmony with my body. I will become a weapon and not loose sight of my target. Single mindedness is all powerful, this is the way of the warrior this is my way. I am Hunter Maverick “The Peaceful Warrior”.
A slight smile grows on his lips and content emanates from his whole body as he goes to his shinto inspired shrine and stares into the mirror, before slipping into meditation with the words “Peaceful Warrior” echoing in his mind.
